NGOs like Arunothaya and SCARF (Schizophrenia Research Foundation) play a role in some schools in Chennai. One Arunothaya Social Worker is working in each of the 22 Corporation Schools in North Chennai. These counselors come every week to talk about love, infatuation, menstrual hygiene, and safe and unsafe touching. They refer children to counselors for one-on-one sessions, said Virgil de Samy, executive director of Arunodaya.

“We plan to work with families and communities, not just students,” said Sharanya Ari, Deputy Commissioner (Education), Chennai Corporation.
