Do you know why Alagar descends into the river?
Maharishi Sudhapas (merchandise sage) took a bath in the river Ganges and performed severe penance towards Perumal. In this case, Maharishi ignores Sage Durvasa who came that way, so Sage Durvasa curses him to turn into a frog.
When Maharishi asked him what he should do to get rid of this, he said, “Do penance in the river Vaigai. On the next day, Chitra Poornami, Kallazhagar will give you bhava release.”
Puranas also say that Alaghar also comes and goes on that day. It is because of this that Alaghar descends into the river. This event was held in Thenur near Cholavanthan. This event is still taking place today.
But it is also noteworthy that Tirumalai Nayak has caused Kallazhagar to rise in the Vaigai river in Madurai to unite the people of Saivism and Vaishnavism and to gather the village and pull the chariot.
