The people and farmers of Erode district are happy as the water level of 105 feet capacity Bhavanisagar dam, which is the source of drinking water and livelihood of farmers in Erode district, continues to rise.
Bhavanisagar Dam:
Bhavanisagar Dam located in Erode district is the main source of drinking water and a dam that provides irrigation facilities. Through Bhavanisagar Dam with a capacity of 15 feet, 2 lakh 50 thousand acres of agricultural lands belonging to three districts including Erode Tirupur Karur are getting irrigation facilities.
After Mettur Dam, Bhavanisagar Dam is the second largest dam in the state and the second largest earthen dam in the world. This dam is considered even more special as it was built after independence.
Also, the Kilbhavani Irrigation Project is the second largest irrigated area in Tamil Nadu for delta irrigation.
Catchment Area of Dam:
This dam is built at the confluence of Bhavani river coming through Mettupalayam Sirumugai in Coimbatore district and Moyar produced in Nilgiri district so the water flow will increase if it rains in Nilgiri hills or if it rains in Erode Coimbatore district.
Increase in water flow:
In this situation, Bhavanisagar dam has faced drought without water supply due to the hot summer heat in the district for the past few days.
It is currently raining widely in various parts of Tamil Nadu and due to the intensification of Southwest Monsoon, it has been raining continuously for the last three days in the districts of Western Ghats such as Nilgiris and Coimbatore.
1205 cubic feet water opening:
Due to this, the water flow to Bhavanisagar dam is continuously increasing. As of this morning, Bhavanisagar Dam has received 4,538 cubic feet of water per second. Also the water level of the dam has risen to 85 feet. In the last 10 days alone, the water level of Bhavanisagar dam has increased up to 15 feet. After this, 100 cubic feet of water in Bhavani river, five cubic feet of water in Kilpavani canal, 600 cubic feet of water for Thadapally Arakkan Fort irrigation and 500 cubic feet for Kalingarayan irrigation, a total of 1205 cubic feet of water have been opened for drinking water.
Similarly, the water level of Gunderipallam Dam, the major dams of Erode district, has risen by a total of 41 feet to 38.80 feet as of this morning. Also, the water level of Varattupallam dam, which has a capacity of 33 feet, has risen to 25 feet as of this morning.
