Stainless steel, used in the iPhone X, XS, 11 Pro, 12 Pro, 13 Pro, 14 Pro, and 15 Pro models, provides superior strength and a premium aesthetic compared to aluminum. However, stainless steel is heavier and more prone to scratches than aluminum. Apple uses a surgical-grade stainless steel, attempting to mitigate some of the scratching issues, but it remains a characteristic of the material.

Water Resistance: Beyond the IP Rating

Water resistance is another critical aspect of iPhone durability. Apple has steadily improved the IP ratings of its iPhones over the years. The IP (Ingress Protection) rating signifies the degree of protection against dust and water. For example, an IP67 rating indicates protection against dust and immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. iPhones from the iPhone 7 onwards feature at least an IP67 rating.

Scratch resistance is paramount for maintaining the pristine appearance of an iPhone. While Apple has improved the hardness of its glass, it’s important to understand that glass is still susceptible to scratching from harder materials, such as sand, minerals, and even certain types of dust. The Mohs hardness scale is often used to measure scratch resistance, with higher numbers indicating greater resistance.

However, improvements in the internal structure of the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 make them quite durable as well, especially since they do not have the weight of stainless steel and are easier to handle. The choice ultimately depends on individual usage habits and risk tolerance.
