Usually, when storms and wind pressures form in the sea areas, the seas are rough. Cuddly waves can rise several feet. But when these two are absent, the sudden rise of sea waves to a height of several feet is said to be the phenomenon of Kalkakala. The people of Kerala refer to this as Kalakadal phenomenon as the sea waves suddenly rise several feet like a thief.
Last month too, there was an incident of piracy in various parts of the country including Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Indian Meteorological Department have warned the public not to venture into seas and residents living in coastal areas to be vigilant.
However, 8 people, including 5 practicing doctors, who were taking a bath in the Kanyakumari sea, were caught in the giant waves and died. In this case, a warning has been issued for the black sea event. The National Oceanic Center and India Meteorological Department have warned that there will be rough seas in four districts of Tamil Nadu till tomorrow night.
The India Meteorological Department has said that rough seas will continue till 11:30 pm tomorrow. The sea in Kanyakumari, Nellai and Thoothukudi Ramanathapuram districts will be very rough and waves will rise to a height of three meters.
Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts have also been notified by the Oceanic Center and the India Meteorological Department. People have been warned not to go to the coastal areas of these four districts in view of the false sea warning. It has also been warned not to bathe in the sea.
It has been warned that the sea will be rough in Chennai and Kanchipuram till noon tomorrow and the sea waves will be rough in Tiruvallur coast till 7 pm tomorrow. The District Collectors have advised to take precautionary measures against the phenomenon of counterfeiting.
