Chennai : 7 Ministers, 3 MPs, MLAs and Corporation Officers held a consultation today in Chennai regarding the measures to be taken to face the North East Monsoon.
The Northeast Monsoon, which brings the heaviest rainfall to Tamil Nadu, begins annually in October and ends in January. Especially, many people have not forgotten the impact of the Mikjam storm that formed in the Bay of Bengal during the northeast monsoon last year. Due to storm Migjam floods, rainwater entered various areas in Chennai (entirely), Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and caused great damage to the public.
Considering such impacts, rainwater drainage works are being carried out intensively in the Chennai Corporation. In case of heavy rains and floods, arrangements are being made to reach the sea through rainwater drains.
Ministers, officers, MPs and MLAs are consulting on the measures to be taken to face this North East Monsoon, today at the Chennai Corporation Office, Ribbon House.
In this consultative meeting, 7 ministers namely Ministers Duraimurugan, Udayanidhi Stalin, KN Nehru, AV Velu, Shekharbabu, MA Subramanian, Thamo Anparasan, Thangam Tennarasu, 3 DMK MPs including Dayanidhi Maran and Chennai Mayor Priya Rajan, Chennai Corporation Commissioner Kumaragurupar have participated.
In this consultation meeting, the MPs and MLAs of their respective areas asked the authorities various questions about the rainwater drainage works in their constituencies and the areas where the rainwater stagnates. Officials of Chennai Revenue Department, Highways Department, Electricity Department, Disaster Recovery Department and Chennai Metro Department also participated in this consultation meeting.
It has been reported that even if there was a heavy flood like last year, various issues such as necessary precautionary measures and rainwater drainage works were discussed in this consultation meeting.
