Puducherry: There are reports that the number of people who have died due to drinking poison in Kallakurichi Karunapuram has crossed 50 till now. Also, more than 100 people are receiving treatment in Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Salem and Puducherry hospitals.
Regarding Kallakurichi poisoning issue, Minister of Public Welfare M. Subramanian today personally visited the patients undergoing treatment at Puducherry Jibmar Hospital and inspected their treatment.
After that he met the reporters there and gave an explanation about the steps taken so far.
Minister M. Subramanian said, “168 people, including 9 women, were receiving treatment at Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Salem Government Hospitals and Puducherry Jipmar Hospital after drinking poison.
On learning about the incident, I (Minister M.Subramanian) and Minister A.V.Velu immediately rushed to Kallakurichi in the name of the Chief Minister’s instructions. After that we intensified their treatment. Others remained untreated.
Immediately after finding him, 55 people who had not received treatment in their homes were rescued. Out of which, 48 people have died till now. Of these, 25 in Kallakurichi, 3 in Puducherry Jimbar Hospital, 16 in Salem and 4 in Villupuram (3 women and one transgender).
Sports Development Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin met their families yesterday and gave relief of Rs 10 lakh each. Also, 67 doctors from many districts like Thiruvannamalai, Trichy, Salem, Villupuram have been brought to Kallakurichi.
They are actively working round the clock along with those who can work in that medical college. Although the Kallakurichi hospital has 600 beds, 50 beds are available for the victims.

8 people in Puducherry are in critical condition. Also, 8 people are also receiving treatment in the general ward of Jipmar Hospital, Pudu. 4 out of 8 are in critical condition.
