Separate ration cards should be issued in the name of husband and wife – MLA Asokan

In yesterday’s Legislative Assembly discussion on cooperative and food subsidy demand, Sivakasi MLA Asokan demanded that separate ration cards should be issued to husbands who live apart without divorce.

Ration cards get stuck in the husband’s house when the married husband and wife separate due to differences of opinion. As a result, the estranged wife lives with her child in a situation where she is unable to buy ration items. Sivakasi MLA Asokan has suggested that separate ration cards should be given to those who live separately if they have a separate ration card so that they can survive on the ration items provided by the government.

In response, Finance Minister Thangam Thanarasu said,

How can separate ration cards be issued if the mother went home angry with her husband? he asked. He said that separate ration cards can be issued only if there is a legal divorce.

Minister Thangam South has said this considering the practical possibilities.
