The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rains over the next three days over Kanyakumari, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Nilgiris districts as the storm forms.
The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday, May 21, deployed 10 State Disaster Response Force (STRF) teams after heavy rains lashed southern and western parts of Kanyakumari, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Nilgiris districts. 296 personnel STRF teams have visited these areas.
The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rains in these areas for the next 3 days, saying that the storm will form. The state disaster department has issued an alert for the districts of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thenkasi, Dindigul, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Virudhunagar and Theni.
Several areas in the southern part of the state were inundated. STRF is carrying out rescue operations together with local people to bring people from low-lying areas to safer places. People have been asked not to go to coastal areas.
According to the State Disaster Management Department, SMS alerts have been sent to 2.44 crore mobile phones in the above districts regarding rain warnings through the Public Alert Protocol. Tourists have been advised not to visit these places at present due to the forecast of heavy and very heavy rains.
