A police officer was killed and a 55-year-old mother and her 17-year-old daughter were killed in the firing by a police officer on duty at Karandukala police station. After this, the suspect police officer also shot himself and died.
Today (04) around 3.35 am, Lahiru Uthara Vithanake, who is on duty at the Karadugala Police Station, was shot dead by a suspect police officer who came to his house in Namaloya area, Enginiyagala, Amparai and fled with a T56 rifle.
Later, the said police officer went to another house in Nelliatta area and shot dead two women due to a long-standing land dispute there. A 55-year-old mother and her 17-year-old daughter died in the incident.
It is reported that this police officer forcibly took the motorcycle and gun of the civil defense officer who was on night duty at the main gate of the police station where he was on duty, and following the incident, he attempted to commit suicide by shooting himself.
The police officer, who was seriously injured in the firing, died on the way to Bipila Hospital.
The body has been taken to Monarakala District Hospital for post-mortem and the reason for the shooting is yet to be revealed.
Inginiyakalai (Amparai) and Karandugala Police Stations are conducting further investigations regarding this murder incident.
