University of Birmingham. Collaborated with IIT Madras; Introduction of new course

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and the University of Birmingham have jointly launched a postgraduate course in Sustainable Energy Systems. These institutes have started the application process for the new course

The new course builds on the launch of the first joint master’s course in data science and artificial intelligence by the two institutes last year. The new course will enable graduates to specialize in the fast-growing field of advancing the fight against climate change.

Applications will be available from May 6, 2024, and offer letters will be sent on June 26, 2024, an IIT-Madras report said.

Students from I.I.T Chennai and Birmingham will study at both before earning a degree offered jointly by the two universities. Students will undertake a substantial individual project within internationally recognized research groups, allowing students to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges.

About the course

The multidisciplinary course focuses on energy systems and technologies that help create a sustainable future, enabling technological development and achieving net-zero goals that encompass engineering, social, economic, environmental and policy aspects. Students will learn about the basic principles behind current energy systems including fuel cells and hydrogen, energy storage, solar and nuclear power.

The program offers students the flexibility to complete their studies at Birmingham or at IIT Madras. The program begins with students starting their studies at IIT Madras and completing short industrial placements. Students have two options:

Option 1: Study in the UK for 12 months including a research project in Birmingham

Option 2: Study in England for six months and then return to IIT Madras to complete the course and undertake a research course at IIT Madras.

Students will benefit from Birmingham Energy Institute’s expertise in developing industrial applications from basic research and IIT Madras’ excellence in developing decarbonisation technologies, IIT Madras said.
