The Madras High Court has questioned how compensation of Rs 10 lakh can be given to the victims of the Kallakurichi poisoned liquor incident.
So far 65 people have died after drinking poison in Kallakurichi and Karunapuram. The Tamil Nadu government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the victims.
Mohammed Ghose from Chennai has filed a Public Interest Litigation in the High Court against this decision of the government.
According to the petition, drinking counterfeit liquor is an illegal act. It has been informed that those who died after drinking counterfeit liquor should not be considered as victims.
It has been stated in the petition that the government has not made it clear on what basis the victims of intoxicating liquor are being given higher compensation while giving less compensation to the victims of accidents including fire.
As the people who died after drinking poisoned liquor were not freedom struggle martyrs, social workers or those who sacrificed their lives for the society, the petition demanded that the government’s order awarding Rs 10 lakh compensation to each of them should be cancelled.

When the case came up for hearing in the in-charge session of Chief Justice Mahadevan and Justice Mohammad Sabiq, it was questioned that Rs 10 lakh compensation is too much for those who died due to intoxication and how can such a large amount be given.
Further, the judges adjourned the hearing for two weeks, ordering the government to know its views on revising the amount.
