On July 30, many people were killed in a landslide in Wayanad district of Kerala state. The number of people killed in landslides continues to rise. The death toll has crossed 400. The search for the bodies is ongoing. The rescued people are staying in camps.

As many people have died in this terrible landslide, the central government has said that it cannot be declared as a national calamity. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said that the Wayanad disaster is the result of illegal human habitat expansion.
