Officials of Chennai Metro Rail Corporation have informed that the construction of metro line for a distance of 20 kilometers has been completed till now in the second phase of Chennai Metro Rail Project.
Chennai Metro:
The Metro Rail service, which was started in Chennai in 2015, has today become an unrivaled public transport service. At present, lakhs of passengers are benefiting daily from the Chennai Metro trains which are being operated on two routes for a distance of 54 km in the first phase. According to the company, 9.11 crore people have traveled on the Chennai Metro train in the year 2023 alone, which is unprecedented.
Metro Phase 2 Works:
In this situation, the number of passengers of Chennai Metro train is increasing day by day, in order to improve the metro train service and to connect the suburban areas in Chennai to the metro train service, the second phase of metro work is currently being actively carried out in various areas.
This second phase of the metro rail project is being implemented on three lines covering a distance of 116.1 km.
118 Metro Stations:
In the second phase of the project, 118 metro stations are planned to be constructed on three routes namely the third line from Madhavaram-Sirucherry to Chipgad, the fourth line from Kalangarai Debarra to Poontamalli and the fifth line from Madhavaram to Solinganallur.
Works completed so far:
About 42.6 km long, 43 subway stations are to be built through the tunnel. The construction work of this metro train started in November 2020. Since then, high-level tunnel works, metro station works are being carried out at various places till now.
At this stage, high-level road construction works are going on in various places including Borur Mughalivakkam Ramapuram Kovilambakkam Manapakkam Ayyappan Thangal Kattupakkam Poontamalli Alappakkam Retteri Shastri Nagar. So far the high level road work has been completed for a distance of 10 km.
Mining:
As far as the mining works are concerned, in Madhavaram in October 2020, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the metro rail tunnel works. After this, these works have started in many places and are going on briskly. So far more than 16 locations of compaction machines are used for tunneling works.
At this stage, 9.50 kilometers on the Madhavaram Taramani route and 0.50 kilometers on the Kalankara Parla Kodambakkam flyover route, a total of 10 kilometers of tunneling work has been completed.
Borur-Poontamalli route from next year:
Regarding this, the officials of Chennai Metro Rail Company have said that, “In the second metro rail project, the first lines will be laid on the Borur-Poontamalli route and it is planned to be put into use by the end of next year. The target has been set to complete all the high-level track work by 2027 and all the tunnel work by 2028.”
