Cabinet to address university non-academic staff salary anomalies on Monday

A memorandum will be submitted to Cabinet on Monday to address the salary anomalies of the university non-academic staff by the Education Ministry. Proposals concerning the monthly allowance and wage disparity faced by university non-academic staff will be submitted to the upcoming Cabinet meeting on Monday, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

A continuous on-going strike started by University non-academic employees last Thursday (2) was held for the eight consecutive day yesterday, based on several demands, including the rectification of the disparity in the salaries of the university non-academic staff and the receipt of monthly compensation allowance.

Accordingly, the Joint Committee of the Inter-University Trade Union Federation of non-academic staff said 13,000 non-academic staff withdrew from all services from May 2.

Inter-University Trade Union Federation Co-Secretary K.L.D.G.Richmond said their members will continue strike action by withdrawing from essential services, if their issues are not addressed with permanent solutions by next Monday.

“The Association further states that the non academic staff were compelled to take the strike action because they did not receive a proper answer to correct the salary anomalies that have been prevailing for some time,” he added.

In this case, the union mentions that they will withdraw from essential services such as support for academic activities of university students, research and laboratory services, and other services including garden maintenance. Also, the University Trade Union adjacent committee mentions that its staff will also boycott all maintenance activities such as water, electricity and cleaning services.
