Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus Chair Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle in a letter to Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB)General Secretary MP Ranjith Maddumabandara has requested to appoint a suitable woman for the Parliamentary seat vacated due to the cancellation of National List MP Diana Gamage.
The Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus will not challenge the verdict of the Supreme Court revoking the Parliamentary seat of former State Minister Diana Gamage. However, It is deeply concerned about further decline of Women MP representation in Parliament with the loss of a member of the Women Parliamentarians Caucus and the loss of women’s representation in the Parliament.
Women’s experience, knowledge and perspective contribute to the formation of policies that benefit all members of the society, and therefore, women’s representation in Parliament is important for an effective democracy, and therefore, the Caucus requests SJB to consider appointing another suitable woman for the vacated seat.
