Chennai Corporation undertaking road construction work

Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has made the one km Sivananda Road from Annasalai to Marina easier for the F4 race in August. 1.3 crore tenders for resurfacing the road with VG 30 quality bitumen.

The road was resurfaced for last year’s race event, which was canceled due to Typhoon Maichang.

Although three roads – Kodib Kardam Road, Annasalai, and Kamaraj Road – have been certified for the event and have a 3.5 km circuit around the island ground, only Sivananda Road was damaged in the cyclone.

The corporation has spent 15 crores on ring roads. Construction of barricades, lights, chicanes, exhibition hall at a total cost of 30 crores.

Senior officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said racing cars have low ground clearance to prevent body roll when taking a turn. “Even a minute oscillation, normally not felt in passenger cars, can cause significant damage to the under-chassis of racing cars, which can lead to death. The festival organizers and officials asked us to repair this road. Racing Promotions Pvt Ltd, the organiser, will finance the repair of the road,” said an official.
