He said this while addressing an event (the day before yesterday) organized by Lakehouse to felicitate students who excelled in the 2021 and 2022 scholarship examinations.
Here prizes were awarded to 35 employees’ children who excelled in the scholarship examination in 2021 and 2022.
The program was organized by Lakehouse Savings Fund for the 21st time and this time many companies like National Savings Bank, People’s Bank, Samara Vasana Fund, Epic Lanka, Ceylon Sussex, Sri Lanka Insurance, Uswattha Confectionary etc.
There, Lakehouse Chairman Harendra Kariyawasam added:
You have reached the first milestone in your life. Your mother and father work for a unique newspaper company in this country.
There is no newspaper company in Sri Lanka that can compare to Lakehouse. It has a history of more than hundred years.
It can be mentioned as the founder who has been publishing major journals continuously in that history of more than a hundred years. You can proudly say that my mom or dad works at Lakehouse. This is the first step in life.
Your journey does not end here. You have to face everything from General Standard Examination, Higher Standard Examination, University Education. Education is very important. You have to learn first, second and third. There is nothing in this world that compares to education.
If I can say anywhere in the world, when I passed the scholarship, the Lakehouse Institute brought us and encouraged us. It was with that courage that I changed. If one day I can say that that difference is what got me here today, then this dedicated time and effort will have real meaning.
Therefore, these sons and daughters have an inescapable responsibility and obligation. It is learning for mother, father and yourself. Thus reading makes a man whole. Nothing compares to reading and education. But there is a change in the way the current generation reads.

Before the commencement of the ceremony, the awardee students and their parents came to the institute premises and paid their respects to the statue of Lakehouse founder late DR Vijayavardhana.
After that it was better to visit the press department, media academy and other departments of the company to get an understanding about it.
