After the historic success of Mangalyaan, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is actively involved in its second mission to Mars.
The Indian Space Agency, which is already in the process of developing a second mission to Mars, has revealed a plan on how to land the spacecraft on the Red Planet. So far, only 2 countries have achieved the record of landing their spacecraft on Mars, USA and China.
India is aiming to become the 3rd country to join the elite club to land a spacecraft on another planet. ISRO announced the Mangalyaan-2 mega project on National Technology Day.
ISRO is already involved in the Mangalyaan-2 project. It will use a combination of rover and helicopter, similar to NASA’s Perseverance rover. It was also said today that the Indian Space Agency is working on developing a supersonic parachute and a sky-crane to deploy the rover on the Red Planet, while the Mangalyaan-2 spacecraft is to be launched by the LVM3 (Mark-III) rocket.
This is not the first time a sky crane has been used to position a rover. NASA is already using it on the Perseverance rover. NASA developed a sky-crane system for its highly accurate and successful landing of the rover on Mars.
This system allows for a controlled and precise landing, avoiding the need for airbags or ramps. The Sky Crane Rover ensures that it lands upright and is ready to begin its mission even in challenging terrain. ISRO will develop technology suitable for Indian rover.
