ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) has subjected only the electric scooters of some companies to the safety quality test as a major turning point in the development of electric two-wheelers. Generally, cars are the only passenger vehicles to be tested for safety standards. And that is done by certain companies. Now for the first time two-wheelers have been subjected to quality testing.
This safety quality test seems to have been carried out at the request of certain electric bike manufacturers. ARAI has not released information about which companies’ two-wheelers were tested. The test was conducted at ARAI’s test center in Pune, Maharashtra.
In India, the incidents of various electric scooter batteries catching fire and causing accidents are on the rise. It seems that it is for this reason that the companies have requested to undergo quality testing of their electric two-wheelers.
This move by ARAI is expected to create a standard framework for electric scooters sold in India. Since electric vehicles are the future, many small companies are making and selling electric vehicles with low quality batteries without proper research.
Due to this, accidents caused by electric vehicles also increase. To prevent such accidents, the Indian government has come up with specific safety regulations for batteries used in electric vehicles. Subsequently, this information has been released by ARAI safety testing. If safety tests are made mandatory for electric two-wheelers as well, the use of electric two-wheelers in India is likely to increase further.
Currently, electric vehicle sales in India are 5%. It is noteworthy that this amount is predicted to increase by 45% by 2030.
