Enactment of Women Empowerment Bill with amendments

The Women’s Empowerment Bill was passed in the House yesterday with amendments. Opposition independent members Vimal Weerawansa, Kevindu Kumarathunga and Chandima Weerakkodi proposed amendments to some of the provisions of the bill. Accordingly, ruling party MP Sarath Weerasekhara voted in favor of the amendments.

The Women’s Empowerment Bill was taken up for second reading in Parliament yesterday.

During this, 05 votes were cast in favor of this amendment and 13 votes against. In this case, the amendment presented by Kevindu Kumaratunga was rejected by 09 additional votes.

Subsequently, the members of the opposition expressed their strong opposition to the statement made by the Minister of State for Women and Children Geeta Kumarasinghe that they will not accept the amendment proposed by the opposition independent MP Sandima Veerakodi regarding the appointment of the members of the commission to be established through this law.

The High Court has pointed out that there are many deficiencies in this law which is proposed for the welfare of women. Therefore, the President of the Parliamentary Women’s Union, Sudarshani Fernando Pulle, urged the MPs to accept the proposed amendments.

Following this, the Chief Minister Sushil Premajayantha informed the House that the proposed amendment was accepted.

Subsequently, the amendments proposed by the opposition members regarding the provisions of the bill were accepted with arguments. On behalf of the government, the Chief Minister presented many new amendments to this bill. The amendments were also passed in the House yesterday.
