The deadline to contribute to the ‘Children of Gaza Fund’ established by President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s initiative to provide basic needs to displaced children due to the military situation in the Gaza Strip has ended on July 31, 2024.

In response to President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s appeal to the public to contribute to this fund during the fasting month of Ramadan, a large number of people across the country joined hands with it regardless of race or religion.

Due to the request from the people to give them an opportunity to contribute to this fund, the deadline has been extended till 31st May 2024.

Although the deadline for contributing to the fund ended on May 31, it was observed that donors continued to deposit money into the fund. The President’s Office has requested that no further deposits be made to this fund.

It has also been announced that after 31 July 2024 any deposit made directly into the official bank account of the Office of the President, the amount will be credited to the Presidential Fund for carrying out social welfare projects.

In the first step, President Ranil Wickremesinghe handed over one million US dollars to the Palestinian government through the official agency of the United Nations, which was received from the funds allocated by the ministries and government agencies for this year’s Iftar events.

All donations received up to July 31, 2024 will be officially handed over to the Government of Palestine in the coming days.
