Hero and Honda:
Hero has sold 4.79 lakh two-wheelers in May alone. This is a decline of 5.68% from last May and 6.59% from last April. Hero had sold 5.08 lakh two-wheelers in May last year and 5.13 lakh two-wheelers in April last year.
Honda follows Hero in second place with sales of 4.50 lakh two-wheelers in May. This May, Honda’s sales have increased by 44.82% compared to last year’s May. However, it has decreased by 6.33% compared to last April. While Hero has a market share of 31.02% in the Indian two-wheeler market, Honda has a market share of 29.15%.
TVS and Bajaj:
Hero and Honda are followed by Indian companies TVS and Bajaj. These four companies account for 90% market share of the Indian two-wheeler sales market.
TVS sold 2.71 lakh bikes last May. This is 7.30% higher than May last year. However, it is 10.05% less than last April. Bajaj sold 1.88 lakh bikes in May alone. This is 3.32% less than May last year and 13.19% less than April last year.
Suzuki and Royal Enfield:
Last April, TVS had sold more than 3 lakh two-wheelers and Bajaj had sold more than 2 lakh two-wheelers. These companies are followed by Suzuki and Royal Enfield at the fifth and sixth positions.
Last May, Suzuki sold 92,032 two-wheelers. This is 32.28% higher than May last year and 4.50% higher than April last year. Among the top 5 companies, Suzuki was the only company to record higher sales than last April. Royal Enfield sold 64,238 bikes in the month of May alone. This is 12.25% less than May last year and 14.39% less than last April.
Two Wheeler Exports:
Although Hero is the leader in Indian two-wheeler sales, Bajaj is flying the flag in exports. Bajaj has exported 1.17 lakh bikes in May alone. Second ranked TVS exported 88,450 two-wheelers in May alone.
These are followed by Honda, Suzuki, Hero and Royal Enfield. Hero, which is ranked fifth in the list, has exported just 18,673 two-wheelers. But, it is 67.56% higher than last year.
Honda is the company that saw a rise in exports in May. Compared to last year, its export volume has increased by 129.37%. Honda has exported 41,858 two-wheelers in May.
Hero Retakes Top Position, Beating Honda:
Overall, including domestic sales and overseas exports, Hero, Honda and TVS occupy the top three positions.
Hero – 4.98 lakhs
Honda – 4.92 lakhs
TVS – 3.59 lakhs
Honda overtook Hero last April in terms of overall export and domestic sales figures. Now Hero has taken the top spot once again beating Honda. Last April, Honda sold and exported a total of 5.41 lakh two-wheelers and Hero 5.33 lakh two-wheelers.
