How was the monthly salary fixed at Rs.6,000? Don’t you think about people? ICourt Question to Tamil Nadu Govt

Non-teaching staff in Tamilnadu government schools Rs. 6,000 salary has been fixed by Tamilnadu government. But Kannan from Madurai filed a petition in the Madurai High Court branch saying that this would not be enough in today’s times.

In the petition, it was stated that “proper norms have not been followed in the placement of non-teaching staff working in the Tamil Nadu Government School Education Department and fixation of consolidated pay. Thus, the ordinance issued in 2010 regarding the salary issue for non-teaching staff should be cancelled. The monthly salary of non-teaching laboratory assistant, office assistant and cleaning staff has been fixed at Rs.6 thousand.

In 2020, I filed a case in the Single Judge Session of Madurai Branch of the High Court for equal pay for Government Model School Laboratory Assistant. The single judge who heard the case ordered that the decree issued in 2010 is not applicable as the petitioner has been selected in the summary. He demanded that the order should be canceled and my work should be limited and my wages should be ordered.”

The petition came up for hearing on Thursday (July 25) before a bench of Justices R. Suresh Kumar and G. Arulmurugan in the Maduraiklai High Court. At that time, the judges said, “The government has fixed a wage of Rs. 600 for the daily wage workers. In that case, how was the decree issued to fix the monthly salary of Rs.6 thousand? In the current price environment, don’t you think about people? How can you support a family on a monthly salary of Rs.6,000? So, is Rs.200 per day enough? How are such decrees issued? How does the Additional Education Secretary issue such orders? Do you sign the decree with your eyes closed?” the judges asked in a barrage of questions.

Also, how can this salary be fixed and signed for non-teaching staff in government schools? One should act very carefully in such matters. The judges ordered that the Tamil Nadu government should file a detailed report in this regard. Subsequently, the hearing in this case was adjourned for 2 weeks.
