Candidates to watch out for
BJP Jammu and Kashmir president Ravinder Raina, Devendra Singh Rana, Iltija Mufti, Umar Abdullah, Sajjad Gani Lone, Waheed Bara and Tara Chand are the main candidates to watch out for in this assembly election. In 2014, the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections were held. In these elections, no major party failed to secure an absolute majority. The Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) led by Mehbooba Mufti won 28 seats while the BJP was the second largest party in the state with 25 seats.
46 seats are required to form the government in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. As neither the PDP nor the BJP could secure a majority, the two parties formed an alliance to rule. This rule lasted till June 19, 2018. On June 19, 2018, the state government fell after the BJP withdrew its support citing lack of alliance with the PDP on key issues including dealing with militancy in the region.
After the breakup of this alliance, Jammu and Kashmir came under Governor’s rule. Subsequently Article 370 was repealed. Also, it was divided into 2 Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Jammu and Kashmir post polls can be watched on major news channels like NDTV, India Today and Republic TV.
