Father is the Speaker of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Speaking at the book launch function held in Chennai in November last year, Appavu said that during the chaos in AIADMK in 2017, 40 legislators of the party had sent him to join DMK, and when he told this to Stalin, he said that we do not need to rely on 40 people to form the government, we will rule only if the people give us power.
AIADMK notice to Speaker’s father
There was strong opposition among AIADMK members to Speaker Appa’s speech. Following this, a legal notice was sent on behalf of Babu Murugavel, AIADMK’s legal team administrator, seeking damages of Rs 10 crore against Appa’s speech about AIADMK MLAs.
Criminal defamation complaint in court
He also filed a complaint against the Speaker under Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code relating to criminal defamation offences. The complaint was first filed online in the Second Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Egmore. However, the complaint was returned. After this, he filed a complaint in the Madras Principal Sessions Court. No action was taken there either.
Justice Jayachandran’s action order
After this, Babu Murugavel filed a case in Madras High Court. Judge Jayachandran, who heard the case, ordered the Chennai Principal Sessions Court to hear the separate complaint. He advised to take the complaint as a file and take further action as per law. Following this, Babu Murugavel closed the case.
An inquiry has been ordered in the case of Speaker Appavu, which has caused shock among the DMK members. It is to be noted that earlier, Judge Jayachandran was the one who investigated the asset hoarding case against Minister Ponmudi and sentenced him to 3 years imprisonment and a fine of 50 lakh rupees. Ponmudi, who lost his post as a minister due to this decision, went to the Supreme Court and got an injunction and became a minister again.
