These temples also feature symbolic values of ancient Indian culture and sculptures depicting daily life. Undoubtedly, Khajuraho is one of the major heritage monuments of the country. All the structures of these temples with a vast history and culture are located close to each other. These temples have traces of Hinduism and Jainism, although we can also recognize hints of Islamic and Buddhist inspiration in many of the structures.
History of Khajuraho Temples:
Most of the Khajuraho temples were built by the Chandela dynasty between 950 and 1050 CE. The constructions are said to have started in the early 10th century and continued into the 12th century covering an area of 20 square kilometers. According to histories, the temple site is said to have had 85 temples in the 12th century but now only 25 of them remain. The Gandarya Mahadeva Temple built by King Vidyadha is famous for its intricate sculptures and art. Kings Yashovarman and Thanga are famous for building Lakshmana Temple and Viswanadha Temple respectively.
Until the end of the 12th century, these temples were active Hindu places of worship. But from the 13th century to the 18th century, these temples suffered massive destruction as the region came under the control of various Muslim dynasties. After a long period of destruction and neglect, the temples at Khajuraho were visited in the 1830s by the British surveyor T.S. Since Burt’s visit, the temples have become popular with travelers from all over the world.
Architecture of Khajuraho:
Like all Hindu temples, Khajuraho temples follow a grid geometric design known as Vastu-Purusha-Mandala. Vastu means residential structure, Purusha means presiding deity and mandala means circle. The structure of both Hindu and Jain temples is similar, with a tall structure on top of which is a heavily carved building called Janga. Each figure in the temples is unique and the sculptures are symmetrically designed.
On the walls of these temples, you will find some beautiful sculptures depicting various forms of meditation, wrestling, spiritual teachings and sensual art with the royal family. Khajuraho is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Madhya Pradesh.
Today’s Khajuraho:
