Gujarat’s capital city of Ahmedabad has been notified in writing to take legal action against those who use white LED headlights that can emit too much light. Customers are advised to take action if they use the above-mentioned headlamps instead of the standard LED headlamps provided by the companies.
In general, the law does not allow extensive modifications to vehicles in India. Customers cannot make major mechanical changes except for some cosmetic changes.
But many a times customers try to change the headlights of their vehicles or use additional lights claiming that the headlights provided by the car manufacturers as standard are not bright enough. Using headlights that emit too much light creates a nuisance for other motorists on the road and often leads to road accidents.
How much light should headlight bulbs use?
Headlights may not exceed 700 lumens in low beam and 1,200 lumens in high beam. Most car manufacturers follow this criteria. But instead of standard headlights, customers are using white headlights in the market that emit 2000 to 3000 lumens of light in their cars.
Also, car manufacturers provide only 45-55W headlamps. But, the headlamps bought in the market are between 90-100W. Using these can be harmful and even illegal. It is notable that between 15,000 and 20,000 cases are reported each year claiming the use of modified headlights.
Now Ahmedabad police have been instructed to take strict action against the owners of such illegal modification of their cars. It is noteworthy that the police can take action on such violations not only in Gujarat, but all over India.
