Southern Railway has issued an important announcement that the mountain train service between Mettupalayam-Coonoor will be canceled till August 22. Mountain train travel is preferred by most of the tourists visiting Nilgiri district.
The Mettupalayam Coonoor Hill Railway service was started on 15th June 1199. Having completed 125 years on 15th June, this mountain railway service has entered its 126th year. JLL Morant, Superintending Engineer of the British Government, was responsible for the development of this mountain railway service.
The highlight of this train is that it is the only one in Asia that runs on multi-wheels till today. This mountain train meanders through 28 bends, enters 16 mounds, crosses 250 bridges and shows the magic of beauty to the tourists who seek it for 5 hours.
Tourists have to book three months in advance to enjoy the scenic beauty of this train.
Landslide:
Mettupalayam Coonoor hill railway track is very steep and this train is operated by multi-wheelers. In this situation, this mountain train service is canceled from time to time during rainy season for safety reasons and if there is a landslide on the route of this train, this train service is canceled until further notice.
Cancellation for one more week:
In this way, the Nilgiri district of Coimbatore has been experiencing heavy rains for the past few days. Due to this, landslides occur in the hilly areas from time to time.
Due to continuous heavy rains and landslides, the mountain train service between Mettupalayam and Coonoor has been canceled for the last one week, and now the Nilgiri Coimbatore district has been warned of heavy rains and the Southern Railway administration has announced that the train service will be canceled for one more week till August 22.
