Pitbull Terrier, Dosa Inu, Japnis Dosa… 23 types of foreign dogs are banned; Animal Husbandry Department action order

Tamil Nadu Government: A 5-year-old girl was bitten by a Rottweiler dog in Chennai. The girl is currently undergoing treatment. In this case, the Tamil Nadu government has imposed restrictions on dog breeders following this incident.

In this regard, the Department of Animal Husbandry has said in a statement:- “On 06.05.2024, an incident which took place in Chennai where a 5-year-old girl was attacked by two domesticated dogs belonging to the Rottweiler breed in a life-threatening manner has caused great distress and panic to the people.

The following information is brought to the public’s attention. About 23 breeds of foreign mixed and non-mixed dog breeds viz., Pitbull Terrier, Dosa Inu, American Staffordshire viz. Terrier, Fila Brasileria, Toco Argentina, American Bull Dog, Boer Poel, Kangal, Central Asian Shepherd Dog, Caucasian Shepherd Dog, South Russian Shepherd Dog, Don Jack, Sarplaninake, Japnis Tosa, Akita Mastiff, Rottweilers, Terrier, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Wolf Commonly known as the Dog, Canario Agbas Dog, Moscow Guard Dog, Cancarso and Pandag, these breeds are listed as highly aggressive and dangerous to humans.

The importation, breeding, sale as pets and all forms of use of the said dog breeds and their hybrids are prohibited. Currently, owners of these types of dogs as pets should immediately undergo male/female sterilization and ensure that they do not breed.

The dog owner must wear a leash and a protective mask when taking the dog outside to public places. The length of the link chain should be equal to the dog’s body width (at least 3 times the length) from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail. “Dog owners wearing good quality collars/shoulders when taking their pets outside will be safer for the pets and the public,” it said.
