A few months ago Karnataka banned the addition of harmful artificial colors in Gobi Manchurian, Kebab and Panchu Maitai. Following this, the state food department received complaints that artificial colors and chemicals were mixed in pani puri.
Subsequently, the food department officials collected samples from 276 shops and tested them. Of these, 41 samples were found to contain artificial pigments and cancer-causing chemicals. 18 pani puri samples (22%) were found to be unfit for human consumption. 52 percent of the samples were found to contain harmful chemicals.
The Food Safety Commissioner said, “For our test, we used samples of pani puri sold in shops ranging from street stalls to star hotels. It was found that chemicals mixed with blue, green and orange colors were found in it. We have given a detailed report in this regard to the government. Why not ban food that is not fit for human consumption?” he asked.
Karnataka Health and Food Minister Dinesh Kundurao said, “We are giving top priority to providing safe food to everyone in Karnataka. The use of artificial colors is prohibited. Our latest research has yielded some shocking information. Accordingly, we are considering banning certain food items.
Restaurant owners must serve safe food with hygiene to customers. “Strict action will be taken against those who do not act responsibly,” he said.
