Heavy rains are falling in Suralmala area of Wayanad, Kerala. In this context, there has been a large-scale flood due to the inundation of water in the panchayats of Vaitri, Vellirimala and Mepeti. Due to this, a sudden landslide occurred around 2 am. The public was greatly shocked by two consecutive landslides. More than 500 houses were trapped in these incidents.
Mundagai bridge cut
A search for more than 1,000 people is underway. Roads and bridges in the area have been swept away by floodwaters. Especially since the Mundagai bridge has been damaged, the areas of Mepedi and Mundagai have been isolated. This has delayed the rescue operations. Many vehicles were also washed away in the flood.
Heavy landslides in Kerala
Currently, the fire department and disaster rescue teams are working to rescue the people trapped in the landslide. Due to continuous rains, there is a problem in reaching the landslide area. In particular, there are a lot of fallen trees in the area. The soil is collapsing here and there. Due to the power cut, the problem continued till early morning.
The bodies of three people were recovered
At present, the work of removing the collapsed soil with bulldozers is going on. According to the latest information, the bodies of three people have been recovered. 14 people were rescued with injuries and admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Landslide twice
The death toll is likely to rise as more people are trapped in the landslide. According to the people of the area, the first landslide occurred in the Mepedi area around 1 am. Subsequently, a second landslide occurred in the Suralmala area around 4 am. After this tragic incident, Kerala state ministers and MLAs have rushed to the scene.
District Collector, District Police Chief and others have also gone. It seems that they are seeking the help of the army as the bridge is damaged and they cannot go to the Mundagai area. The landslide in Suralmala has shocked not only Kerala but the entire country.
