Sukesh Chandrasekhar gets ‘cooler’ facility in jail; Permission of Delhi Court

Amid the scorching heat, a Delhi court recently allowed conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar, who is lodged in the Mandoli Jail for allegedly extorting Rs 200 crore from former Fortis promoter Shivinder Singh’s wife Aditi Singh to get bail for her husband, to get a cooler.

Advocate Anand Malik, appearing for Sukesh, alleged that the central cooling system in the jail was “deliberately” turned off. Anand Malik said the “unprecedented heat” caused Sukesh’s skin to break out in rashes and his blood pressure dropped.

“…in the backdrop of this unprecedented situation, the discussion regarding the health of the prisoner/accused Sukesh Chandrasekhar should be interpreted under the umbrella of the general principle that not only the treatment of a sick person but also the health of the prisoner should be carefully considered,” said the Additional Patiala House Court in its order dated June 3. Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh said.

The judge also said that while the 2018 jail rules did not have any provision for providing private air conditioners to inmates, the “situation” of unprecedented heat in Delhi could not be “conceived of emerging in the future” while framing the rules.

Four days after Justice Chander Jit Singh passed the order, Sukesh wrote to District Judge Sanjay Sharma complaining that the cooler was still not provided.

The current case against Sukesh is being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and is based on an FIR registered by the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police. It is to be noted that Sukesh is also accused in the complaint of trying to pay bribe to get the double leaf symbol.
