A decision has been taken to acquire all types of firearms and ammunition issued to the general public (civilians) for self-defense by the Ministry of Defence.
In pursuance of the powers conferred on the Secretary of Defense under Sections 6(1) and 6(2) of the Firearms Ordinance No. 33 of 1916, the Government has decided to acquire firearms on a temporary basis.
Further, steps will be taken to hand them back after due review.
According to this, all the owners who have received the permit and are in possession of firearms and ammo have been notified to hand over to the Commercial Ammunition and Firearms Procurement Unit (CEFAP) at Velisara Camp of the Sri Lanka Navy before 07th November.
And after so handing over a copy of the acceptance slip issued by the Commercial Ammunition and Firearms Procurement Division should be handed over to the Civil Defense and Development Division Office (CEFAP) established at the main entrance of the Ministry of Defence.
The Ministry of Defense will take legal action under the Firearms Ordinance No. 33 of 1916 against those who fail to surrender their firearms and ammunition before the above date.
Meanwhile, it is further informed that the notification will not apply to firearms issued by the Ministry of Defense for property/crop and sporting activities.
