The Government of Sri Lanka has welcomed the Canadian government’s extension of the ban by declaring the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as terrorist organizations along with the World Tamil Movement.
Canada says LTTE supporters who remain after the war have an international fund-raising and procurement network. WTM’s review notes that the group continues to help raise funds for LTTE terrorist activities. The decision, which follows a rigorous review process, reaffirms the continuing threat posed by these systems.
On April 6, 2006, the Government of Canada listed the LTTE as a terrorist organization for the first time under the Criminal Code, and Canada reviews this every five years. This is the third time the Canadian government has extended the ban on the LTTE. The ban on the LTTE was lifted in England this year.
