On behalf of the Tamil Nadu Cauvery Farmers Association, farmers protested in the Cauvery Delta districts of Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Sirkazhi, Chidambaram and Karaikal by burning the Commission’s resolution in favor of the Meghadatu Dam.
General Secretary PR Pandian, who led the protest in Thanjavur, told reporters:
Water Rights in Tamil Nadu DMK The regime has been slipping ever since it took over. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister did not come forward to stop it. Legal proceedings are not expedited.
In particular, the construction of a dam across Siruvani, which had been stalled since 2015, has been completed by the Kerala government within two years of the DMK regime taking charge.
Also, Kerala has started the construction of a dam across the river Spider, which is the main river that can reach the Amaravati Dam. The Tamil Nadu government, which is supposed to stop this, is trying to cover it up.
Andhra government is continuously building dams across Balaru. The Tamil Nadu government did not come forward to stop this.
In this case, the right of Cauvery, which we had fought for for 50 years, will be lost under DMK rule. On February 1, the Cauvery Management Commission has illegally passed a resolution in favor of the Meghadatu dam and sent it to the central government. The Chairman of the Commission says that the Tamil Nadu Government has not objected to this. The Tamil Nadu government, which has to stop this, is reluctant to knock. It has not taken any action to insist on annulment of the decision and is ignoring it without taking any legal action.
Condemning this and insisting to withdraw the decision in the 30th commission meeting to be held today, we are protesting by burning the copy of the resolution passed in the commission.
Sandeep Saxena, Additional Chief Secretary, Irrigation Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, who supported the resolution in favor of Meghadatu Dam, should be sacked.
He said that on the coming 25th, the leaders of all farmers’ associations will gather in Coimbatore and decide to intensify the protest against the loss of Tamil Nadu’s water rights and to launch a serious protest against the Tamil Nadu government.
Hundreds of farmers including L. Palaniappan, M. Senthilkumar, M. Mani, P. Arivu, Bhu Kamaraj, Tirupati, Bachcha Ravi Maheswaran Padmanaban participated in the protest.
