As of yesterday, a total of 16.25 lakh people in 2800 villages in 29 districts have been affected by the floods. The districts of Nagaon and Darrang in central Assam and Karimganj in Barak Valley have been worst hit by the series of heavy rains.
Kaziranga Park is 80 percent flooded due to torrential rains. More than 11 lakh people in 28 districts have been affected due to floods in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. Rescue and relief operations are underway with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES), Army and paramilitary forces.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma has assured that the 3rd flood has occurred in July and all necessary assistance will be provided to the affected people by August 15. The Indian Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rain will continue in Assam today and tomorrow.
The Indian Meteorological Department has said that heavy and very heavy rains are likely in the northern states for the next five days. Assam, Meghalaya, Uttarakhand and other states have been issued a red alert for heavy rains. The Meteorological Department has warned that moderate to very heavy rains may occur in Kokrajhar, Chirang, Paksa, Parpeta, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Udalguri, Biswanath, Lakhimpur and Themaji districts and a few places may experience heavy to very heavy rains.
Orange alert for very heavy rain has been issued in West Bengal, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Manipur. The Indian Meteorological Department also said that heavy rains are likely to continue in Delhi for five days. The India Meteorological Department has warned that strong winds of up to 40 kmph and heavy rain accompanied by wind will occur in the states of Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.
