Congress Fort Amethi:
As far as the Amethi constituency is concerned, the Congress party has won 13 of the 16 Lok Sabha elections held so far. BJP has won twice and Janata Dal once. Amethi is seen as the home constituency of Nehru family members like Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
Rahul – Smriti :
Rahul Gandhi had won the elections in 2004, 2009 and 2014. In 2019, Rahul Gandhi contested in Amethi and Kerala Wayanad constituencies. He saw victory in Wayanad and defeat in Amethi. BJP candidate Smriti Irani won in Amethi and took over as Union Minister. This time Smriti Irani as a BJP candidate has started campaigning in Amethi on behalf of BJP.
Silence of Congress :
In this situation, the Congress leadership has not announced the candidate for Amethi constituency yet. Similarly, from 2004 to 2019, Sonia Gandhi has won Raebareli constituency, which is a Congress stronghold. But this time he retired from Lok Sabha politics and got elected as MP from Rajasthan. Thus, there is still no announcement of the candidate.
Why the delay?
Elections in Amethi and Raebareli will be held on May 20. Last date for nomination is 3rd May. Therefore, it is said in the political circle that after the election in Kerala on April 26, Rahul Gandhi may file his nomination to contest in Amethi constituency and Priyanka Gandhi will file her nomination in Raebareli constituency.
Amethi Status:
Rahul Gandhi said about the Amethi constituency, “I will abide by whatever the party leadership decides.” At the same time, in Amethi constituency, Priyanka Gandhi’s husband Robert Vathora’s supporters are putting up posters saying that the people of Amethi want Robert. However, the Congress is criticizing this act as an attempt to cause confusion by the BJP.
The confusion for these two constituencies can only be resolved if the Congress leadership breaks its silence after the Kerala Lok Sabha elections.
