Yesterday Rajapakse, today Sheikh Hasina, tomorrow?

It has been proved in Sri Lanka as well as in Bangladesh that those who have done active activities are hated by the people when their selfish interests increase.

Sheikh Hasina was elected as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh for the fourth consecutive term in January. He has a long political tradition. She is the daughter of Mujipur Rahman who liberated Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971. Hasina took over the leadership of his Awami League party after Mujibur was later killed by the army.

Bangladesh improved economically during his reign.
The country’s per capita income quadrupled. Two and a half crore people were lifted out of poverty. Bangladesh has become a leading country in the production of ready-made garments globally. In other words, the economy of Bangladesh is better than that of Pakistan.

The media praised Sheikh Hasina’s administrative skills as everything happened. That’s why he was able to win a fourth consecutive term in January with a majority. Hasina, who was so proud, has now become the most hated person in the country due to her selfish interests, anti-people activities, corruption allegations, political murders, etc.

The opposition is strong because the Sheikh Hasina government’s announcement that the families of those who fought for the liberation of Bangladesh will be given 30 percent of government jobs will be of great benefit to her party members. Around 300 people have died in the last month’s protests.

Internet services were suspended to quell the protest. There is no public transport. Knitwear companies, which are the backbone of the country, are not functioning. The Prime Minister has repeatedly called for dialogue to resolve the situation, but the student leaders have not accepted it.

The situation took a turn for the worse when protesters finally entered Sheikh Hasina’s residence in Dhaka with batons on August 5. The army, waiting for Annan’s Chavan ground to be empty, safely put Hasinal on a plane and sent him abroad.

The same thing happened in Sri Lanka in 2022. The Rajapakse family ruled with pride as the ones who saved the country from the LTTE. The city of Colombo did not become a war zone as the public rose up against reasons such as rising prices, complaints of corruption, violence, unemployment, shortage of essential commodities such as petrol. In the climax, they broke into Prime Minister Rajapaksa’s house and looted it. He had to leave home and go into hiding with the help of the army and later flee to America.

After Rajapaksa, Sheikh Hasina is no more than an example of how egoism destroys rulers.
