Box by box… 1,600 kg of rotten mutton arrived by train to Chennai seized; Food safety department in action

Chennai 1,600 kg of mutton smuggled by train to Egmore railway station was seized by officials of the Food Safety Department. Brought in more than 40 boxes from Jodhpur
The mutton was confiscated.

Officials took action after testing confirmed that the meat was expired. A team led by Food Safety Department Officer Satish investigated and seized and took action.

Satish said, “It came from Sikandar area to Jaipur and from there it was taken to Chennai by train. It was found that the mutton had been slaughtered and processed 5 days ago. The mutton is going to be handed over to the Chennai Corporation after the examination by the veterinarian. An inquiry is being made as to who is going to distribute the meat brought to Chennai.

Goats are supposed to be slaughtered and cooked within 3 hours, but it has been slaughtered 5 days before. Now we have seized only 24 boxes here. By then the train had left.

The rest of the boxes will be seized by a team of Food Safety Officers at successive stops including Chengalpattu and Madurai,” he said.
