In a petition filed by Chennai-based animal welfare activist Muralitharan, there have been incidents of mother elephants being separated from their cubs in recent times. The forest department is trying to place these cubs with other herds of elephants. The late elephant expert Ajay Desai is said to have said that there is only a 5 per cent chance of another herd joining the cubs.

So instead of reuniting baby elephants separated from their mother with another elephant herd, four or five baby elephants should be brought together and released back into the wild.Calves separating mother elephant – Govts response order-oneindia news

A bench of Justices Satish Kumar and Bharatha Chakraborty, which heard the case, ordered the central and state governments to respond.
