Tender to operate Chennai city buses on contractual basis! This is the last date to apply!

Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation:

The management of MTC Chennai has announced a tender to run the buses owned by the Chennai Municipal Transport Corporation. It has been informed that August 28 is the last day to submit applications for this purpose.

City buses play a very important role in Chennai’s public transport service. Even though electric trains and metro trains are running, city buses are providing a helping hand to the residents of Chennai where neither of these are available.

Shortage of Drivers, Conductors:

In this situation, 3436 buses are being operated daily on 659 routes by the Municipal Transport Corporation in Chennai. About 33.60 lakh people travel daily in buses operated from thirty two workshops.

It is reported that out of total 3436 buses, only 3000 buses are plying daily and other buses are not plying due to lack of drivers and conductors.

TENDER TO OPERATE ON CONTRACTUAL BASIS:

At this stage, steps have been taken to run all the buses. Accordingly, the Managing Director of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation has issued a tender to fill the posts of Driver and Conductor on contractual basis for the Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation.

He said, “Electronic tenders are welcome from private manpower companies who have arranged drivers and conductors for the Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation on contractual basis. To participate in this dental, a deposit of Rs. 25 lakhs has to be paid. The last day to submit this contract form is August 28.”

Although this announcement has brought happiness to private companies, this announcement has made them unhappy as the transport corporation employees’ unions have been insisting that the government bus drivers should not be handed over to the private sector.
