What are the contracts?
Agreement to set up a ship repair dockyard at Uthuru Thila Falku, Maldives; These include the Hydrographic Survey agreement to know the climate of the sea around the Maldives, changes in the sea, and the agreement to send an unmanned aircraft to the country to monitor the arrival of other countries through the Maldives sea. These contracts were executed in 2013 and 2019. In fact, all these agreements are agreements made by India for the benefit of Maldives.
Pressure from China?
In this case, the Security Services Committee of the Maldives Parliament has passed a resolution saying that these agreements will harm the sovereignty and security of the Maldives. So it is expected that Maldives will cancel these agreements soon. The fact that such a resolution was passed by the country’s parliamentary committee on the day after Maldives President Mohammed Muisu attended the swearing-in ceremony of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi raises various doubts.
