Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal’s interim bail plea for 7 days extension cannot be heard, says Supreme Court Registry

On March 21, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Delhi liquor policy scandal. Kejriwal’s side filed a case in the Supreme Court against the enforcement department’s arrest.

In the hearing of this case on May 10, Kejriwal was granted bail till June 1 as an interim relief. Following this, the order also stated that Kejriwal should surrender in Delhi’s Tihar Jail on June 2.

Arvind Kejriwal had filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking extension of interim bail by 7 days. A request was made that he should be allowed to surrender on June 7 citing kidney problems and sudden weight loss and that this should be investigated as an urgent case.

The summer special bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and KV Viswanathan said in its order yesterday that it cannot be heard as an urgent case, and since the hearing in the petition against Kejriwal’s arrest is already over and the verdict will be issued after the summer vacation, now it will be heard. Marked as not required. However, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court had said that the request could be sent to the bench.

Following this, today (May 29), the Supreme Court Registry refused to accept Arvind Kejriwal’s interim bail extension petition for hearing. As it is summer vacation season, Kejriwal’s side has also instructed to file this plea in the special court.
